Tips on How and Where to Buy Emeralds or Emerald Jewelry
Buying loose emeralds or finished emerald jewelry can be quite a challenge, so it’s important to always purchase from a place that offers guarantees on what you’re getting.
Tips about How to buy genuine emerald jewelry:
Knowing the basics of buying emeralds is important for the investment you’re about to make.
With my experience in the emerald and jewelry business, I can offer some advice on choosing genuine emerald jewelry or loose stones. However, knowledge and expertise take time to develop, so don’t expect to become an expert with just a few tips. I’ve been in this business for 38 years, and I’m still learning.
The price of emeralds changes over time, depending on the seller and the country of origin. To purchase these beautiful gems, it’s important to stay informed and learn more about them.
I’m excited to share the highlights of my experience as a seasoned loose emerald dealer and longtime jeweler. While it’s impossible to capture everything I’ve learned in just a few pages, I can certainly offer some valuable tips.
With so many online retailers offering loose emeralds and finished jewelry, figuring out the best option can be tricky. Some pieces come at a bargain, while others carry a hefty price tag. Even in a jewelry store with an honest salesperson and the piece right in front of you, making the right choice isn’t easy if you’re not a gemstone expert—especially with a seller urging you to buy on the spot.
Professional salespeople rarely know the finer details of what makes a high-quality emerald. Their main focus is closing the sale, often by tempting you with “big discounts” to make you feel like you’re getting an amazing deal.
Of course, price and budget are important factors that will determine the quality of the gem you eventually purchase. The key is to pay a fair price while having a bit of knowledge about what you want to buy.
If you’re planning to invest a significant amount, make sure the guarantees are genuine and satisfactory, and that the company has a solid track record and good reputation. Ghost companies that vanish overnight are common, especially with unregulated overseas businesses.
Our emeralds are hand-picked, offering great quality at a fair price.
The price of emeralds is a tricky thing
You can buy an opaque stone for much less than an almost perfectly transparent natural, mined emerald. Sometimes the best emerald for you isn’t the same as what I think is best for me—it all depends on your taste and budget.
Unlike diamonds, where other qualities may take the spotlight, color is the most important feature in emeralds. However, a dark emerald can appear dull because the strong saturation of chromium, and sometimes vanadium, can block the gemstone’s sparkle. Natural emeralds are rarely free of inclusions, as they are formed in nature and typically contain flaws and inclusions. In fact, about 90% of gems are heavily included.
Here’s the average price of our Colombian emeralds.
Prices can vary a lot depending on where you’re buying, whether there are middlemen involved, if the emerald or finished piece is readily available or made to order, and whether it comes from a big-name brand or a small business. Those of us who create jewelry and sell exclusively online can often offer better prices while still providing the same guarantees as any well-known company. The difference is that when you reach out, you’re talking directly with the owners and makers, so you’ll get clear, straightforward answers.
We are very particular about our emerald buying standards. We look for three color hues—light-medium, medium, and deep green brilliant. Each must be free of carbon spots, fractures, or cracks, which are rare to find. The ideal stones have an even tone, medium saturation, and deep hue. We travel at least three times a year to the source, purchasing high-quality, hand-selected gems at the best prices. With 38 years of experience, an honest reputation, and being native to the sourcing region, I am a knowledgeable and skilled wholesale buyer.
Natural emeralds usually have inclusions, unlike other clear gemstones such as tanzanite or aquamarine. The term “clarity feature” in gems refers to the inclusions and flaws in an emerald. Sometimes invisible to the naked eye, these are the unique fingerprints of natural gemstones and serve as proof of authenticity. This is why eye-clean emeralds are extremely rare and highly valuable.
The higher the carats in precious gemstones, the higher their price tends to be. However, if the carat weight is high but other qualities like color, tone, and cut aren’t exceptional, even a large emerald might not be very expensive.
